The state had planned to increase the tax, but retailers asked for a delay, hoping that increased purchases from people traveling to the state would raise at least $50 million by the end of September. But revenues were short, and after an audit was completed, the tax was increased. The tax increase was effective Wednesday. New Hampshire's cigarette tax is still well below taxes in its neighboring New England states.
